Not 'tongue tied' as in "I can't speak". The 'tongue tied' that causes issues with breast feeding, bottle feeding, speech and according to many reports--"french kissing later in life". Much later I hope. But I'd hate to be yelled at years down the road when my son is dating.
The issue is "resolved" by cutting/snipping the frenulum underneath the tongue. (The thing that attaches your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. But ewww and ouch!!! My poor baby!
So. . . what to do???
I'm still in debate.
I know it sounds gruesome but apparently the fix is quite easy. My girlfriend's son (not a preemie) had his clipped at a regular doctors office visit. Clip - done!
ReplyDeleteOne of my babies was tongue tied too. He had trouble latching on to breastfeed and trouble getting a seal on the bottle nipple. They also told me that it could lead to a speech impediment in the future. However, there are thousands of people walking around that are tongue tied and have no problems. Because of the prematurity and trouble sucking, the doctors said it would be best to clip it. They did it right then in the office and it took less than 2 mins. He cried a little bit afterwards, but had no trouble recovering. It looked to be back to normal within three or four days.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with you decision!!
